“Would those statements,” says Cicero1 to
Calidius, “have been delivered by you in such a
manner if they had been true?” And again, “You
were far from kindling our emotions. Indeed, at
that point of your speech we could scarcely keep
ourselves awake.” We must therefore reveal both
confidence and firmness, above all, if we have the
requisite authority to back them.
