witness had been produced. And what a witness! O ye immortal gods! It was not enough that he
was only one; it was not enough that he was a man utterly unknown; it was not enough that he
was a man on whom no one could rely. Did you not ruin also your former trial by producing
Valerius as a witness, who, having had the rights of a citizen conferred on him by the favour
of your father, requited his kindness not by honourable services, but by open perjury?
