This was a mere manoeuvre, with banter thrown
in—a device to divert attention from the enactment of this law. That
it was so, we have the testimony of plain fact: all the time they never paid
over a shilling of the money, while they disannulled most of the established
laws by a single statute, and that the most disgraceful and scandalous ever
enacted in your assembly.
