Condition:
Side A is in excellent condition except around the mends. Side B is much more worn. The central part of the figure appears to be smeared.
Decoration Description:
Side A: winged Nike. The Nike flies to the right, her feet off the ground with toes dangling. Her head is turned toward the left, while her wings overlap above her right shoulder. Her arms are spread wide, and she holds a thymiaterion in her left hand and a flowering tendril in her right. She is dressed in a sheer, crinkly chiton, a heavy himation with a border of dots and crosses, and a sakkos. Short tresses fall around her face, with longer tresses falling on her shoulders. She has an earring in her visible left ear and wears a coil bracelet on each wrist. Her hair is rendered in dilute glaze.
Side B: standing youth. A youth stands facing left, his head turned to the right. He wears a wreath and a cloak which leaves his right shoulder bare. His right hand is raised to his left shoulder; he holds onto a staff in his left hand. Part of his face and chest have been obliterated.
Shape Description:
The amphora is of Panathenaic shape.
Collection History:
The vase was given to the University Museum by Arthur H. Lea in 1931. Beazley writes (1936) that it was no. 53 in the Braun sale at Christie's on February 21, 1850, and no. 282 in his second sale there on May 18, 1853.
