Decoration Description:
Troilos and Polyxena. Polyxena runs at full speed to the right followed by Troilos, on horseback. Polyxena holds a sash over her head in both hands, and is looking back over her shoulder as she runs. Troilos spurs his horse forward with a stick and also looks back over his shoulder. He is mounted on a stallion which plunges forward, forelegs off the ground. A second horse runs along side it in a similar pose. Under the horses' bellies is a falling hydria, liquid spilling from the top and from a crack through the middle of the body. Troilos wears a short chiton held at the waist with a wide sash, and a chlamys held by a fibula at his neck. His hair is worn in a roll at the back of his neck with bangs and long side locks framing his face. A narrow cord binds the hair in place. Polyxena is wearing a chiton with an overfold. The sheer, lower part of the chiton is decorated with a simple black band. A narrow crossed fillet is tied around Polyxena's hair. The horses' manes are represented in a distinctive manner, being divided into three distinct parts.
Collection History:
The vase formerly belonged to the Forman collection. It was acquired by the museum in 1899.
