Condition:
The preserved portions of the vase are in good condition. There is some loss of surface details.
Decoration Description:
Interior: youth and girl (or hetaira?) embracing, their hands around each others' necks. The youth stoops to kiss the somewhat diminutive girl, while she gazes into his eyes. She wears a chiton and a diadem. He wears a mantle and a wreath.
Side A: komos. Five youths drink and dance. Of the youth on the far left, only the foot and a corner of his mantle is preserved. The naked youth second from the left kicks up a leg toward his companion, who dances with a large amphora, his mantle flung over his shoulders. A naked youth holding krotala (castanets) in his raised hands follows the youth with the amphora, while on the far right another youth dances forward bearing a large skyphos. He too wears his mantle flung over his shoulders.
Side B: komos. Three youths and two bearded men dance. On the left a man kicks up a knee, one hand at his hip, the other in the air, as he looks down. The youth second from the left bends over and raises his hands over his head. A second bearded man dances in the center, his head thrown back and one arm in the air. The naked youth second from the right throws one knee high and raises one arm toward the dancing youth on the far right. With the exception of the one naked youth, the men and youths wear their mantles flung over their shoulders to leave their legs free. All wear wreaths.
Collection History:
The vase was purchased by Gerhard in 1846. It was acquired by the museum in 1851.
