But I ask you, if a man envies those whom other people pity, from what villainy do you think such a person would refrain? Is it possible that he hopes to get money by slandering me?1 And if he makes me out an enemy on whom he seeks to be avenged, he lies; for his villainy has always kept me from having any dealings with him either as a friend or as an enemy.
1 A poor man like the speaker was not the natural prey of a slander-monger, who would hope to be bought off by a wealthy defendant.
