[12] By the Achaean Crathis once stood Aegae, a city of the Achaeans. In course of time, it is said, it was abandoned because its people were weak.1 This Aegae is mentioned by Homer in Hera's speech:—“They bring thee gifts up to Helice and to Aegae.
Hom. Il. 8.203Hence it is plain that Poseidon was equally honored at Helice and at Aegae.

1 Probably because the population declined. It is just possible that the site became unhealthy. The word ἀσθένεια admits of either interpretation
