In my judgement, it is not open to
him to make the slightest use of that plea.—If you, sir, admit that
you did bring in your law on behalf of the persons who, as you say, have now
done their duty, you must clearly be found guilty on this count,—that
statutes still valid distinctly forbid you to introduce a law that does not
apply equally to every citizen; and the jury have sworn to give judgement in
accordance with those statutes.
