Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, Vol 1,
1867, p. 142
Brill's New Pauly: "Ammianus Marcellinus, We know the life of the
historian A. (c. AD 330-400) almost exclusively from his work. Its contemporary second half
gave him the opportunity to blend his own experiences into imperial history. A born Greek,
as he says in his biographical conclusion (31,16,9), he served as protector domesticus under
the army commander Ursicinus, who in 355 received the assignment to remove the usurper
Silvanus in Cologne..... The title Res gestae is found in the grammarian Priscianus, the
only author who cites the historian in antiquity. In the conclusion (31,16,9) A. explains
the scope of his work: from the principate of the emperor Nerva until the downfall of the
emperor Valens (AD 96-378). Tacitus had continued his histories up through Nerva. A. aspires
to continue Tacitus' work of 30 books of annals and histories and to surpass him by one book
with 31 books. A. also follows his predecessor by connecting imperial history and imperial
biography. The accident of transmission took care of a further parallel: 13 of A.'s books
were lost, and the loss is about as great for Tacitus..." Rosen, Klaus (Bonn). "Ammianus
Marcellinus." Brill's New Pauly. Antiquity volumes edited by: Hubert Cancik and Helmuth
Schneider . Brill, 2009. Brill Online.
