Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, Vol 3, 1867, p. 902:
"Statius, P. Papinius, a distinguished grammarian, who after having carried off the palm in several public literary
contents, opened a school at Naples....He was the author of many works in prose and verse....The extant works of Statius are
1) Silvarum ... 2) Thebaidos ... 3) Achilleidos... "
Brill's New Pauly: "P. Papinius S. Epic poet, late 1st cent...Juvenal is the only contemporary who mentions S.
by name: in an ironical passage, S. is cited as an example that public reputation and material success do not necessarily
go hand in hand .... All other biographical details must be sought in S.' Silvae..
Probable dates: born in AD 45, died in 96. S. came from Naples... and was of Greek descent.."
