Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, Vol 2, 1867, p. 951:
"Marinus, of Flavia, Neapolis, in Palestine, a philosopher and rhetorician, was the pupil and successor of Proclus,
respecting whose life he wrote a work; he also wrote some other philosophical works....An epigram of his, on his
own life of Proclus, is preserved in the Greek Anthology...."
Brill's New Pauly: "Marinus, Neoplatonist philosopher from Neapolis (Samaria), end of the 5th cent. AD,
According to Damascius (Vita Isidori 141), M. had abandoned the Jewish faith and turned to Hellenism....When Proclus died in AD 485,
M. did succeed him, but probably only for a few years; his successor was Isidorus.... On the first anniversary of his teacher's death,
M. held his eulogy, which has been preserved under the title ‘Proclus or On Happiness. This speech is the most important document on the history
of philosophical teaching in Athens in the 5th cent. AD. Isidorus rejected M.s' exegesis on the Platonic ‘Philebus so strongly that he burned his copy
(Damascius, Vita Isidori 1-42); Isidorus also criticized M.s' view that the objects of the Platonic ‘Parmenides are not the gods as Syrianus and
Proclus had stated, but the Forms (Vita Isidori fr. 245). M. wrote a commentary on Euclid's ‘Data, of which only the preface has been preserved,
and expressed the wish that philosophy be as accurate as mathematics...." Saffrey, Henri D. (Paris).
