Historian
Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology:
"Gorgias, of Athens, a rhetorician of the time of Cicero. Young M. Cicero, when at Athens, received instructions from Gorgias in declamation, but his
father desired him to dismiss him. (Cic. Fam. 16.21.) It appears from Plutarch (Plut. Cic. 24) that Gorgias led a dissolute
life, and also corrupted his pupils; and this circumstance was probably the cause of Cicero's aversion to him. Gorgias was
the author of several works...."
Brill's New Pauly: "Greek rhetor of the 1st cent. BC, probably from Athens. He was the younger
Cicero's teacher in 44 until the latter's father forbade their contact (Cic. Fam. 16,21,6; Plut. Cicero 873ab).
Seneca (Controv. 1,4,7) mentions G., but the Greek quotations have been lost in the transmission. G. wrote a work on
figures of speech (περὶ σχημάτων; perì schēmátōn) in 4 bks., translated into Latin by his contemporary Rutilius Lupus..."
