Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, Vol 1,
1867, p. 126-7: "Alexander Traillanus....one of the most eminent of the ancient physicians,
was born at Tralles, a city of Lydia,
Brill's New Pauly: "Alexander of Tralleis... Greek doctor about AD 565,
son of a doctor called Stephanus. He came from a wealthy family; one of his brothers was the
architect Anthemius. A. travelled through Italy, Africa, Gaul, Spain, possibly with the troops
of Justinian, as well as through the entire Aegean region, before he settled in Rome as a
practising doctor and teacher of medicine. Even if the basic features of his physiology are
Galenic, in the interest of practical medicine he vehemently opposed a dogmatic Galenism. In
his therapeutics, consisting of 12 books, which he wrote at an advanced age, he willingly
included faith remedies and popular remedies, chants and amulets, heathen, Christian and
Jewish elements..." Nutton, Vivian. "Alexander." Brill's New Pauly. Antiquity volumes edited
by: Hubert Cancik and Helmuth Schneider . Brill, 2010. Brill Online. Tufts University Library.
