Historian
TLG Canon of Greek Authors and Works, Third Edition,
Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, Vol , 1867, p. 1:
Brill's New Pauly: "Ephorus, rom Cyme in Asia Minor; Greek universal historian, lived c. 400-330. On the basis of his style,
in antiquity he was held to be a student of Isocrates. He was a contemporary of Theopompus (FGrH 70 T 3-5; 8; 28), and was said to have refused Alexander's
invitation to accompany him on his campaign in 334 BC.....He was highly regarded as the founder of the genre of universal history (cf. Pol. 5,33,2), and was
quoted extensively by writers of similar works in the 1st cent. BC (Nicolaus of Damascus, Timagenes, Diodorus and Strabo); it was only in the Roman
imperial period that interest in him waned...." from Meister, Klaus (Berlin). "Ephorus." Brill's New Pauly. Antiquity volumes edited by: Hubert
Cancik and ; Helmuth Schneider . Brill, 2011. Brill Online. Tufts University Library. 27 September 2011
