Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, Vol 2,
1867, p. 606: "Ion, of Chios, was one of the five Athenian poets of the canon, and also a
composer of other kinds of poetry; and moreover, a prose writer, both of history and
philosophy...."
Brill's New Pauly: "Ion, 2, from Chios, author, approx. 480-423/2
BC.....He came to Athens as a young man (between 465-462, TrGF 19 T 4a). He is an
exceptional figure among the literati of the 5th cent., since he worked with various genres
- in prose as well as poetry. Callimachus in his Iambs expressly praises the variety of I.'s
work (fr. 203,43ff. Pfeiffer ). I. probably wrote ten tragic tetralogies, although only
twelve plays were still known in Alexandria......" Zimmermann, Bernhard (Freiburg). Ion."
