TLG Canon of Greek Authors and Works, Third Edition, pg. 392
Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, Vol 3,
1867, p. 1137-1138: "Timocreon, of Rhodes, a Lyric poet, celebrated for the bitter and
pugnacious spirit of his works, and especially for his attacks on Themistocles and
Simonides...."
Brill's New Pauly: "Lyricist and elegist from Ialysus in Rhodes, early
5th cent. BC, according to the Suda also a writer of the Old Comedy (for which no evidence
survives, however). In Mesopotamian Susa, T. entertained the Persian king as a pentathlete and
a jester (Ath. 415f-416a). It is well known that there was a feud between him and
Themistocles, whom he attacks for his failure to return him to Rhodes... Most of T.'s poems
(fragments survive in a number of metres: iambic, trochaic, dactylic or dactylo-epitrite and
Ionic) were probably recited at the symposium...." Robbins, Emmet (Toronto). "Timocreon."
Brill's New Pauly. Antiquity volumes edited by: Hubert Cancik and Helmuth Schneider . Brill,
2009. Brill Online.
