Condition:

The preserved portions of the cup are in good condition. There is some pitting of the surface, and loss of glaze along the fractures. Some of the added white has worn away.

Decoration Description:

Interior: youth and woman. A young woman stands on the left in front of a cushioned stool, her hand extended to the youth on the right. The youth faces forward, his head turned toward the girl. He holds a staff in one hand and is wearing a mantle and a wreath. She wears a chiton and himation and a wreath. Her other hand is hidden by her mantle.

Side A: woman seated spinning, youths and women. A woman sits spinning between two couples, a spindle in one hand and a hooked object in the other. She faces foward in her chair and is seen frontal face. A youth stands to the right talking to a girl holding a large box. He gestures while speaking and leans on his staff. On the left a second youth talks to a girl holding an alabastron. He holds his staff in his left hand and gestures with his right. The spinning girl and the girl on the left wear chitons and himations; their hair is covered by a sakkos. The girl on the right wears a chiton and himation and a wreath. Both the youths wear mantles and wreaths.

Side B: youth and woman, man and woman. Two couples converse, while a third girl stands watching on the right. The couple in the center face one another. The youth is leaning on his staff, one hand on his hip. The girl holds out an egg and gestures with her other hand. On the left, a bearded man holds out a hand toward the woman on the far left, his other hand holding his staff. The woman faces foward, her head turned toward the man. On the far right stands a third woman, holding a pitcher and phiale. The youths wear mantles, the women chitons and himations. The girl on the right wears a sakkos, the girl in the center a wreath. The head of the woman on the left is not preserved.

Collection History:

The cup once belonged to the Prinz-Albrecht-Line of the house of Hohenzollern.
