Subject Description: In the Heraion at Olympia, Pausanias saw, among statuary dedications, a marble Hermes carrying the baby Dionysos, a work by Praxiteles (Paus. 5.17.3-4). It is still debated whether the statue fitting this description, uncovered through German excavations there in 1877, is the original or a later copy (more likely the latter).
