Subject Description: Pausanias (Paus. 1.24.1) noted a group of Athena in the act of striking (or advancing upon) the satyr Marsyas, because he reached for the flutes that the goddess threw aside. This group--comprised of Athena, turning away with a trailing left arm reaching to the flutes, and nude Marsyas advancing toward her--has been reconstructed from copies of the figures that were recognized through illustrations of the scene on later works (the earliest of which is a red-figured oinochoe in Berlin).
